Lois and Joe…

Sometimes, it can be quite a challenge maintaining a relationship–keeping all those qualities thriving through the years. Let’s call it…being a successful couple. It’s how some people are able to go through all the ups and downs of life and still have the glow and lightness of young love…it’s Lois and it’s Joe.

They are pictured here with two of Joe’s Bonsai Trees– which was my original idea for this post– but after meeting them, I decided to go in another direction…it’s Joe and it’s Lois being a successful couple.

I arrived at my scheduled time to meet with them. Joe was already hard at work in his art studio, so he gave me a tour and explained what OPEN FIRE Enameling process was and how he developed it in the mid 60’s. He showed me some of the artwork and jewelry that he created; he was also working with a student that was interested in learning his craft.

Lois arrived and we all strolled over to the garden area for the pic. They both spoke of moving to Safety Harbor in 1981, and the opening of Spencer Art Studio and Safety Harbor Antiques and Collectables–which is next door. They also commented on how the city has evolved to what it is today, and credited local individuals and groups that work tirelessly to keep that change happening.

I didn’t ask them about being a successful couple…didn’t have to. They are both in their 80’s, and they still go to work…Lois, in her antique store…Joe, in his art studio. They have maintained their independence within their relationship…the level of respect they have for one another is clearly obvious…AND…take a close look at the pic and what you’ll see is the gift of true love.

(By the way, the next sentence was the deciding factor in changing this post!!!)

When Lois arrived to take the pic that day, Joe smiled at her–grinning from ear to ear–and proclaimed, “there’s Ms. America!” The expression on his face made my heart melt. And so, what you see here is a very special couple that has continued to keep–THE GLOW.

Oh yeah! Just to let you know, the Bonsai Trees are 35 years old, and they are STUNNING!! If you walk down Main Street by their shops, you can see them. BUT…why not stop in…shop and engage in conversation with one of Safety Harbor’s most successful couples.
