National Hugging Day 2You can’t give a hug without getting a hug.

January 21st is National Hugging Day.   I’m giving all you out there a few days’ notice to start planning for this  “feel good”  day.  It was founded in 1986  to help peeps show more emotion in public, and the best way to celebrate is to offer a hug to anyone and everyone you want.

FYI…make sure that they would be accepting of a hug…no black eyes, please!

Studies show that human contact has many health benefits like helping build a good immune system, improving psychological and physical developement, decreases risk of heart disease…AND…lifts the spirits.  Hugging also helps to reduce blood pressure, and has become one of the most favorite types of social greetings.

This nonverbal communication exudes so many emotions.  Love and affection, friendship and greetings, comfort and consolation are just a few to mention.  Every age is age appropriate, and every gender, race and religion can participate. So many to hug and so many types of hugs.

I’m feeling a list coming on so away we go!!!

*  the happiness hug

*  the greeting someone you haven’t seen in a long time hug

*  the support hug

*  the moving from handshake to hug, hug

*  the sympathy hug

*  the “bro” hug

*  the tree hug

*  the group hug

Lots to embrace…don’t ya think?????????

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???  I hope not January 21st.  Go out and get some hugging goin’ on!!!  Reduce your blood pressure…restore your immune system…lift your spirits…just take the challenge, and give a hug for no reason at all.  I assure you, it will make your heart and soul smile.

This pic is some of the children’s choir of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor, and this is their group-choir hug. Looks like fun, doesn’t it???

Why not try it out and leave me a comment on your fave type of hug.

Pub Culture…The Heart of a Village…

Pub Culture...They have itPayday came and with it a beer.
–Rudyard Kipling

What is a pub??? It stands for public house…but it’s really so much more. It’s a place that celebrates community life…a place where locals meet and get to know each other…a place that welcomes all ages. It’s not a cafe or a club…it’s the pub…8th Avenue Pub, that is.

Creating a pub culture takes a family effort. Mike and Joan Kelly, pictured here, have established the true “pub atmosphere” with serving craft beers on tap and by bottle. Mixed drinks are also available…AND…lovin’ the new pizza oven. It’s a wood fired oven from Italy, and let me just say, the pizza is outstanding.

Drinks are consumed and friends are made…that’s pub culture…that’s Mike and Joan’s vision. They have lived in the village for over twenty-six years and they love it. Their children, Danny, Courtney and Sean all work for the pub to keep it running smoothly, whether it be working behind the bar, playing music or doing the books, it’s a true family affair…working hard to produce an atmosphere and also products that they are proud of.

They also added Tillie, Jenn, Flip and Jason…some key peeps in helping the pub to run efficiently and to make that delectable wood fired pizza that I mentioned earlier. I guess you could call them, Mike and Joan’s extended family.

“A sensitive community,” is what Mike calls Safety Harbor. He sees the camaraderie that can happen in a pub environment, and that’s why 8th Avenue Pub hosts many fund-raising events to assists with different charities and non-profit associations.

A pub culture…a warm culture…that’s 8th Avenue Pub. What a great place to meet and greet your fellow villagers. If you live near, why not walk on down and partake of some of that heart…of your community.

BTW…The garage concerts happen here, but that kids, truly deserves its own post. You’ll hear of that later this year.

Happy Whatever…

Happy Whatever 2The question goes like this…if you only had THREE months to live, what THREE resolutions would you make?

Well, first things first…I wouldn’t be asking you the question because, quite frankly, I really don’t care about what you would do. All I care about is what I would do. My first resolution is to mind my own business and not to buy into other people’s dramas. It is so easy to get roped into the lives of others…it’s like I don’t have a life of my own.

AHA!!! That’s my problem…I don’t have a life. I’m too stuck to let myself live, mostly out of fear. Call me a scaredy cat if you must, but I live with the fear of not being good enough…fear of rejection…being the last person pick for a dodge ball team…whatever.

Onto my second resolution…loosing the fear. I’m a human being and if I want to give fear a big kick in the ass, I will have to be ready to make lots and lots of mistakes, get rejected plenty of times and learn to deal with being the last peep picked for dodge ball.

Now…the biggie…I want to fall in love again. I’ve truly only been in love once in my life. How do I describe it??? I don’t think that I can, but I will try with just one sentence.

When you hug that person, you feel like you’re one…like you’re home. I miss him, but I must move forward with the hope of finding someone who will be okay with me making tons of mistakes, will not reject me and thinks it’s funny that I suck at dodge ball.  It’s kinda like that song by Grace Jones, “I’m not perfect but I’m perfect for you.”

So there are my THREE resolutions for my Happy Whatever. It’s none of my business, but if you would like to share your thoughts, there is a comment section at the bottom of this post.

Striving to be perfectly imperfect.
